SUPERPLASTIC FORMING (SPF)
So, what is Superplastic Forming or
SPF?
SPF is a hot forming process in which sheets of superplastic grade aluminum are heated and forced onto or into single surface tools by air pressure. The hot forming process elimates residual stresses in the finished components
SPF allows for shapes that are not possible with conventional stamping which allows designers the creative license to design without normal manufacturing concerns. SPF requires only one tool that has only the male side machined to product data. This process can now compete with compression molded SMC panels with the benefits of aluminum panels. SPF reduces the number of stampings allowing for the design of complex shapes in a single aluminum panel.
